This is a biggie when you don't know where to turn when your water heater starts giving you the rotten egg smell. We have been dealing with this issue ever since our first week when we opened in 2006, how to get rid of the smell well its not always as simple as black and white.
Most common issue in our area is the anode rod installed in the water heater causing a reaction with the water, We have found that magnesium in the rod reacts with the sulfur causing the rotten egg smell. We need to get that rod out and replaced with zink / aluminum rod not the cheapest rod either but wait just changing that rod isn't going to magically get that smell gone. This is a bacteria that has made your water heater its new home, We need to flush the system and shock the system on a regular basis.
Long periods of no use (like up at the cottage) and turning the temperate down past 140F adds to this problem
I will be updating this as we go please feel free to post bellow.
